ALICE COOPER
Dragontown

Part two of a proposed trilogy that Alice Cooper started with the previous Brutal Planet, Dragontown is a musical trip through Hell itself. Taking the heavy, industrial tinged hard rock and adding elements of his darker style, the music on Dragontown is both frightening and alluring. We start off with the song "Triggerman", apparently our guide through this town, in a jaunty straight-forward hard rock number. Next is "Deeper", which is one of the more darker numbers on the disc, both musically and lyrically. It harkens back to the industrial flavor from Brutal Planet. The song "Dragontown" itself, one of my favorites on the disc, is full of dark and nightmarish imagery, as we visit the damned who dwell in this town. I like the way that Alice himself is brought up- "And there's Alice dear / And all the little things that got him here...now you're here". Alice's sense of humor is in top form as well, in songs like "Sex Death And Money", "Disgraceland" and "Fantasy Man". "I Just Wanna Be God" offers an amusing look at some guy who, as the title says, just wants to be his own little god. The best indication of Alice's sense of humor in serious subjects, though, is found in the mid-tempo retro rocker "It's Much Too Late": "I've never kicked a dog, a child or my wife / I never looked at pornography / I swear it on my holy saint mother's life / but somehow she's down here with me."
I definitely wouldn't classify Alice Cooper as a "Christian artist". Ever since professing his faith in Christ Jesus, he's gone on the record to say that he's more of a "prophetic theatrical artist", and with works like The Last Temptation, Brutal Planet, and this, Dragontown, he's proven himself worthy of the role. This is not for those squeamish or into thought-provoking lyrics rich with dark imagery and humor. Simply put, Alice Cooper cannot be boxed into the narrow parameters of the CCM market. But for those looking for something different, more of a proper scaring with a taste for something spooky and deep allegorical lyrics, Dragontown is the disc for you...
