ANTESTOR
The Defeat Of Satan
Momentum Scandanavia
1991 / 2003
Antestor is one of the unknown elders in extreme Christian metal. Actually, if the history lesson that comes within the CD jacket tells it correctly, Antestor is one of the bands that helped start the whole northern European Christian extreme metal scene, around the same time that the infamous Norwegian Black Metal Inner Circle was rearing its pimply-faced demonic head. Obviously, when you're in an extreme band that speaks of hope in Jesus Christ and the defeat of Satan, and kicking serious metal hiney to boot, you're going to get a bunch of presumptuous and whiney threats from the key players in the so-called Satanic Black Metal scene surrounding you. And Antestor did get some serious threats, but continued to plug away, releasing the classics Martyrium and The Return Of The Black Death into the hands of the Extreme Metal Christian underground. And, I'm pretty sure, still cheesing off whiney Satanists everywhere...
The Defeat Of Satan is a collection of Antestor's first two demos from 1991 and 1993: The Defeat Of Satan and Despair. This is very doomy death metal with black metal influences from the area, resulting in some very haunting, depressing and wonderful metal. Production wise, the album lacks, but it's a collection of demos, and as demos, I'm not complaining. Much, anyway. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this CD...which I still don't have, as I listened to a friend's copy to formulate this review. Now, since it was only limited to 999 copies (why do they DO that?!?), I either have to pirate off a copy (which I don't want to do if I don't have to), or try to find a reasonably-priced copy on the internet. Either way, fans of the dark and extreme metal should at the very least check this band out...and then try to find a copy of this...
