From Blackest Darkness

Cranial Captivity

1996

(Let it be known, there is a black metal band that has recently emerged from Europe that is using the moniker Aeturnus. Don't mistake them for this Christian thrash band that is being reviewed now)

That aside, let me introduce you to a very good concept that maybe could have benefited from a little spit-and-polish in the execution therein. My assessment of 'From Blackest Darkness' is thus: A loosely structured concept album based on the destructive murderous spirit and the judgement and destruction of the person that (to quote from their song "Carnage") "lives to kill". It's a concept commonly explored in Christian death and thrash metal, and equally as commonly misunderstood in the regular Christian market. Anyway, thesis paper put away, here's the report:

'From Blackest Darkness' starts off with a metallic version of the Imperial Death March from before, should be taken into context with the next song, "Knee Deep In The Dead". I say this because there's been many a well-meaning Christian friend of mine that question Star Wars. Cool. This segues into "Carnage". This song, the singer from the band has said why I have this CD in my collection. It's an unsugar-coated look at murder.

The only real (for lack of a better word) problem I really have with 'From Blackest Darkness' is the production. Yes, I've harped on production quality in the past, but that comes from years in radio and recording classes. I'll say it's raw. That adds to the CD, and at.
