ALETHEIANApolutrosis
Hope Prevails Records
2003
Remember Crutch? They hit us with an excellent slab of extreme metal a few years back, and then disappeared. Now, aparrently, they've changed their name to Aletheian, and are striving for more of an atmospheric forest / extreme / doom / black metal thing. While a very ambitious notion, it does take a bit of work to pull off what they've tried. While it's obvious Aletheian was striving for something epic, it feels a bit disjointed at times, especially at the first instrumental break on "Hamartia- Movement II". It sounds like they're trying to go for a wall of extremities, but it just comes off as a confused mess of solos. The use of both black / death vocals with clean vocals works at times, sometimes it doesn't. It's obvious they're going for an Opeth sound, but they do have a bit of a way to achieve that kind of extreme and beautiful sound. Worth checking out...
