ALEIXA
Honey Lake
Liquid Disc
1996
...I would describe this disc as a genuenly fun listen. Simply put, it's a deft blend of EBM pop and guitar-driven aggro-industrial, with female vocals that go from syrupy sweet to jagged at a drop of a hat. Think of it as evil dance. Think if Trent Reznor (from NIN, for those who don't know) and 80s pop phenom Debbie Gibson had a love child and sent it off to be raised by Al Jourgenson of Ministry, you'll get the general picture...
...this is one of those discs I pop in whenever I need a pick-me-up without losing my dark humor edge. Just listen to the track "I Could Murder". Sure, it starts off as one of those pop-flavored ditties (and I swear they used a Debbie Gibson sample at the beginning...don't ask me how I know), then the kids chime in chanting "M-U-R, D-E-R, K-I-L-L!" Disturbing to some, heart-warming to yours truely. Unfortuneatly, Aleixa (pronounced a-LEE-ka, as in "I have to take..." Yeah, I know, but it makes the point) only released two albums before calling it quits, and it was such a long time in between CDs to begin with. Shame, really. If you can find this, their first album, snatch it up...
