ALEIXA
Disfigured
Bulletproof Records
1999
The disc starts off with "Familiar", which is an infectious trance/techno piece with "If you know me, you know what's coming" whispered at points. And those lucky enough to discover Aleixa's Honey Lake release back in 1996 before Liquid Disc went kablooie, we indeed know exactly what's coming. And the duo doesn't disappoint either, when it segues into the second track, "Purge", which is chock full of what made me love Aleixa to begin with- heavy techno beats, distorted guitars, and the raw and heavenly vocals. Like the album cover, the music on Disfigured is darker and heavier than that on Honey Lake (not that Honey Lake was a bunch of rainbow vomiting optimist tunes, mind you), taking what I've referred to as "evil dance music" to a whole new level- the electronics seem a bit more technical, the guitars seem a bit more distorted, and even the vocals seem a bit more gritty and dark, like the band has been through some tough times and this is the result. Whatever the reason, man this is a good disc. Favorite cuts: Well, the whole disc is worth an entire listen, but as far as songs that stand out for me- "Purge", "Await", "Only Roses", "Pacify Me", "Ultradramatic", "My Bed With Tears", "Disfigured", and the cover of Duran Duran's "The Reflex". There's also a remix of "Await", which is more of a trance reworking that would work great for clubs. There's also a hidden track that's really nothing more than studio shenanigans. Amusing and cute. Anyhoo, excellent disc by a band that shall be missed...
